　　沙皇专制时期俄国的一个村子中，农夫特维（托波尔 Topol 饰）与妻子女儿住在乌克兰族的犹太人居住区里，虽然经常忍受来自非犹太居民的歧视，他却一直恪守传统生活着。村里来了一位贫穷的俄罗斯青年菲得卡，特维赏识他的才学，把他聘为家庭教师。渐渐地，各种挑战他的传统哲学的事情出现了。他想把大女儿特拉嫁给有钱的屠夫，特拉却爱上了贫穷的裁缝默特，相爱的两人坚决要在一起，特维不得不妥协接受两人的婚姻。二女儿夏娃爱上了家庭教师菲得卡，特维斩钉截铁地反对两个不同信仰的人相爱，为此与女儿断绝关系。当他和村民们被沙皇派人赶出村子时，准备投靠住在纽约的舅舅的一家人，遇到了也在逃亡的女儿夏娃和丈夫，在两人真诚的乞求中，特维放弃了自己所遵从的传统哲学，原谅了女儿的出格。对他来说，离开这里，就意味着抛弃传统，开始全新的生活。 　　本片获得第44届奥斯卡奖最佳摄影、最佳音响、最佳配乐。
