电影根据真实的悲剧事件改编。维塔利·卡罗耶夫是一名来自奥塞梯共和国的建筑师，非常热爱自己的家庭。2002年，维塔利的妻子和孩子在前往巴塞罗那看望他的途中，乘坐的飞机在经过德国南部上空时与另一架飞机相撞，造成两家飞机上70多人全部遇难，而其中大部门都是孩子。维塔利是最先到达现场的人之一，并自己找到了家人的遗体。关于事故的指责声不断，接着提起诉讼，但最终人们发现，撞机事件发生时值班的空管员以及其所属公司有重大责任。事故发生后的两年之间，维塔利一直努力从责任方获得解释和道歉，但始终没有成功。维塔利雇佣了一名私家侦探，找出了那名空管员的真实身份，飞到瑞士，并在其花园中将他乱刀捅死，之后该空管员的尸体才被他的妻子和三个孩子发现。因为谋杀彼得·尼尔森，维塔利在瑞士监狱呆了五年。他为自己的道歉，他说尽管自己认罪，但是对于罪行却完全没有印象。他现在重回工作岗位，继续在奥塞梯共和国担任建筑师。
